What do you think about Food Porn Adverts?

So I came across this interesting article the other day, which stated that 4% of consumers in the UK are influenced by food porn, style adverts and 45% were not influenced at all by them. This I thought was interesting, I must be part of the lowly 4% because there have been a number of times I have been shopping and tried something new because I had seen an advert for it, shot in that kind of style.

In the UK Marks and Spencer are now famous for these vibrant adverts, the music and the style certainly tempt me. The results showed that women were more likely to be swayed by these adverts, whereas men were not, which I do not find surprising, men would probably prefer real porn over food porn. But it is interesting to see that when it comes to influences, most people consider value for money and quality in their produce.

Online voucher code retailer, My Voucher Codes conducted the research, they continually provide offers and codes for people looking to save money, so that’s probably why cost came high for many people. The results are broken down here:

  • Cost looking at value for money – 64%
  • Quality – 52%
  • Availability – 39%
  • Selection and choice of products – 35%
  • Customer service – 23%
  • Advertisements – 18%
  • Welfare standards – 12%

Understandably for many people cost is a concern and is what would dictate what they buy on a weekly basis, along with quality. But sometimes when you’re looking for a treat something which catches your eye or a tempting advert could influence you to buy. I’m also hugely influenced by Instagram images, food websites and TV shows when it comes to choosing what to cook for my family. Following on the research, most people are influenced to try new foods and recipes by watching TV shows which focus on food:

  • TV shows focusing on food – 56%
  • Recipe books – 53%
  • Restaurants – 50%
  • Social media images or videos – 49%
  • TV chefs – 45%
  • Supermarket recipe cards – 36%
  • Websites or blogs – 21%
  • Recommendations from family or friends – 15%

What influences your shopping habits, do you even notice food porn style adverts?
